"If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health." —Hippocrates
Living a life of health and wellness involves many facets, one of which is nourishing our bodies well, giving it the correct foods for optimal functioning. Nutrition is what the body's cells require in the form of food, to sustain life. Our daily diets are what supply us with the vitamins, minerals, proteins, antioxidants, etc that help our bodies fight off disease and illness and keep us healthy, both physically and mentally.
They key to a well balanced diet is selecting a combination of foods that will meet our body's nutritional needs. Generally a diet of fresh fruit and nuts, vegetables, not too much fat, little salt and lots of water is a good guideline, but in today's fast paced, fast foods and stressful lifestyle, this is not always easy. Balance is the key. It is true that "you are what you eat". A balanced and varied diet is vital to a person's well-being and can have a major impact on how we look and feel about ourselves.
There are always steps we can take to help us lead more active, fulfilling lives and increase our chances of living longer. By avoiding smoking and excessive drinking we can reduce the risk of certain diseases such as heart disease, respiratory problems and even some types of cancer. By getting involved in routine monitoring of cholesterol levels and blood pressure, we can make necessary changes to our lifestyle before potential problems become serious.
Regular physical exercise should form part of our daily routine. This helps build up stamina and strength and manage body weight. Walking, cycling, jogging and swimming are all ways of staying fit.
By maintaining a positive outlook, interacting with others and getting involved in continuous education and training can also contribute to well-being. Reducing the levels of stress in your life with activities such as meditation, prayer, yoga, and different forms of relaxation can help us deal with stress.
