Disablement Cover

Qualifying Criteria

  • Owns a 1Lifedirect policy with pure life cover
  • Between the ages of 18 and 60 years
  • South African citizen
  • Bank account that allows a monthly debit order

You can add value to your 1Lifedirect policy with our optional disablement cover. This cover provides financial compensation if you are medically unfit to work at your own or an alternative suited occupation.

There are two disablement cover options to choose from, either Occupation-based or Event-based.

  • What it costs

Occupation-based Disablement

  • Pays out from R50 000 to R200 000 if you become permanently and totally disabled and cannot perform your normal job or other work to which you are suited
  • If the full disablement benefit is paid out, your other life cover will not be affected
  • Your cover level will not decrease until five years before you turn 65 or retire
  • Covers you immediately; and
  • Includes a Guaranteed Assurability option, meaning that you can increase your cover amount with limited underwriting or on your third policy anniversary, if your lifestyle changes; for instance, when you get married, buy a home or start a family
  • Choose our Disablement Premium Waiver option, which pays the premiums of your pure life and dread disease policy on your behalf for a period of up to five years if you become disabled and the full cover amount of your 1Life disablement policy is paid out.

Event-based Disablement

  • Pays out a percentage of your cover amount (from R200 000 to R4 million), depending on the kind of disability you suffer; for instance, if you go blind or lose an eye, you get 50% of the amount and if you become permanently blind in both eyes, the full cover amount will be paid out
  • If the full disablement benefit is paid out, your other life cover will not be affected
  • Covers you immediately for accidental disablement
  • Includes a Guaranteed Assurability option, meaning that you can increase your cover amount with limited underwriting or on your third policy anniversary, if your lifestyle changes; for instance, when you get married, buy a home or start a family
  • Choose our Disablement Premium Waiver option, which pays the premiums of your pure life and dread disease policy on your behalf for a period of up to five years if you become disabled and the full cover amount of your 1Life Disablement policy is paid out.

What it Costs

Your disablement cover will form part of your 1Lifedirect policy. Your premium is based on your specific risk profile (each individual is different) and this has an impact on the premium you will pay.

Anna is a healthy 35-year old single parent of two who works hard at her job as a marketing manager. She loves watching her children grow and she wants them to be successful one day. Her son has already shown an interest in art and her daughter wants to be a doctor. Anna wants to ensure that she will not become a burden to her children should she become disabled and not be able to take care of herself. She can buy R500 000 life and disablement cover from 1Lifedirect for around R177 per month*.
